Winner of the 2006 Photographic Portrait Prize and a commended finalist for the 2005 Helen Lempriere Travelling Scholarship, Vanila Netto will be presenting a new body of work, Tensile Struts at Arc One Gallery on the 12th September, 2006.
Vanila Netto reinstates value to forgotten objects by playfully assigning architectural and design ideas to otherwise discarded waste products. Heavily influenced my minimalist icons such as Le Corbusier and Brancusi, Netto creates sculptural works in a performative
construct.
Augmented objects can shift between categories of meaning and value, depending on their mode of display, their relationship to the model, and on the viewerÕs experience of them. NettoÕs openness to free interaction of experience of both her subjects and viewers with the material properties of the objects in the photographs allows the objects to move in and out of commodification, high and low cultural value, and ultimately from being removed and related to the viewerÕs experience.
