PRELUDE 2008 is a preview of new work from selected artists to be featured at Arc One Gallery in 2008 - Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Jacky Redgate and Imants Tillers.

Maria Fernanda Cardoso

Born in Columbia, now living and working in Sydney. Cardoso is an international artist, graduating from Yale University with a Masters degree in sculpture and installation in 1990. She exhibits broadly in major museums and galleries, in the US, Latin America and Europe, including in 2003 representing Columbia in the Venice Biennale. In June this year she has been included in the Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition, The Hours: Visual Arts of Contemporary Latin America.
Prelude will be the first exhibition of Maria's work in Melbourne.

As a migrant Cardoso has a desire to connect with her environment. Working with materials from the natural world - often in an unaltered form - is a crucial strategy for examining relationships between humans, their environments and other living species. The feathers she uses have been reinvigorated from their status as industrial waste - a by product of the farming of emus for their oil, leather and meat. Cardoso creates a distinctive visual language in which the legacies of high modernist movements intersect with her personal concern for generating social commentary through everyday references.

Jacky Redgate

Jacky Redgate has a 25 year exhibition history, with representations in numerous prestigious national and international exhibitions, including Australian Perspecta, numerous Biennales of Sydney and 2005-6 a major survey show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.

In recent three dimensional work Edgeways 2006 produced for the 2006 Clemenger Art Award I placed mirrors in plastic objects some of which I had previously photographed in the series STRAIGHTCUT  2001-2006. An unintentional effect occured with a light play on the ceiling. The object, rather than throwing a shadow throws light. The insertion of the mirror in the container denies the volume of the object. The work in Prelude entitled Bump, Hatch and Lucy 2007 continues this exploration with objects and light in a series of still life arrangements using mirrors and coloured light.

Imants Tillers

Since the early 1980's Imants Tillers has worked on a programme of works on small numbered canvas boards conceived as part of his Book of Power. Some of the themes Tillers explores in his works include dislocation, colonisation and appropriation. He has exhibited widely in Australia and abroad. He has been represented in major international exhibitions including the 1986 Venice Biennale and Documenta 7, Kassel, Germany. More recently he was given a major survey show at the National Gallery of Australia, Imants Tillers: One World Many Visions, 2006 and was shortlisted for the 2006 Clemenger Art Award at the National Gallery of Victoria. After a demanding schedule in 2006 Imants will be taking time out from exhibitions this year but has provided a
celebratory work titled Blossoming 9 for the Prelude exhibition and will have a solo show with Arc One next year.
